SXSW Imaginary Lava Interview Jaemin Yi

This past week, I finally got to attend the madness that is South by Southwest (SXSW) – a set of film, interactive, and music festivals taking place over 10 days in beautiful Austin, Texas. I spent a lot of time at SX’s official Social Good Hub and met a lot of amazing people who are all motivated to make the world a better and happier place.

I also got the awesome opportunity to be interviewed by SXGoodGuys about Imaginary Lava and my thoughts on social good entrepreneurship. Check out the quick piece below:

When we think of social good we generally think of nonprofits or perhaps a branch of a larger enterprise devoted to a cause. While this isn’t always the case (TOMS would be a prime example of a company tied to a mission), it isn’t exactly the norm either. This can and should change, and according to one entrepreneur, it’s a trend that’s on the rise.

Jaemin Yi, CEO and founder of the San Francisco-based Imaginary Lava Studios, creates animated web videos for nonprofit, good businesses, and social causes. “I like it when I can work on a project and not only feel good creatively but make an impact on a deeper level than just profit,” says Yi.

The studio works with organizations such as Planned Parenthood, Sea Change, and Parent Revolution, a nonprofit focused on revolutionizing public education. Yi became involved in social causes while in college and says that the increased interest in social good could be generational.

“I’m noticing a lot of my peers are really dissatisfied with just making money and being ‘successful’. After a few years, they’re thinking there’s got to be more. People feel really compelled right now to do social good because it’s something you can’t get from a job title … The funny thing is, I actually don’t feel like I’m limiting myself at all. In fact, maybe the opposite. It’s actually helped grow my business, and I think that’s encouraging for a lot of entrepreneurs right now,” adds Yi.
